DRY CAT FOOD COMPARISON CHART Updated July 24,2010 |
|
Have you ever wondered why so many cats are developing kidney disease? This health concern has lead me on a search for the answer. Here is a possibility that I found: http://tedeboy.tripod.com/drmichaelwfox/id88.html ”Purina Research Report presented at the 1998 Purina Nutritional Forum held on 4-6 June 1998 says under the heading "Nutrition and Renal Function" that 80% of cats with kidney failure have metabolic acidosis and goes on to say "….it is likely that the high incidence of uremic acidosis in cats relates, at least in part, to the acidifying nature of many cat foods. It has been speculated that routine use of acidifying diets may contribute to the relatively high incidence of chronic renal failure observed in cats over the past decade". The paper says that alkalizing to counteract all the acidifiers the pet food companies put into the pet food reduces mortality. Therefore the pet food companies are to blame for the high incidence of kidney failure in cats because they load the pet food with carbohydrate and this alkalises the urine which was found to be causing struvite which stops cats passing urine and can kill them within 24 hours if they are not catheterized and taken off dry food altogether and because of this the pet food companies began putting acidifiers such as DL Methionine into the dry pet food but this has been found to be causing metabolic acidosis which can cause kidney failure and calcium oxalate stones in the kidneys which can cause kidney failure. The Purina paper says that acidifying pet food does not cause kidney failure in dogs as much as it does in cats although it does cause kidney failure in dogs too.”
So, it is best for your cat to not feed dry food. But if you are going to feed dry kibbles, you should select one that has low carbohydrates and is grain free. You can purchase dry grain free cat foods with high meat protein levels that the equally priced to the poorer quality foods. Your cat will also eat less of the higher quality foods because they contain more meat and are more digestible. Be sure to change your cat’s diet slowly. Additional links for the protein, fat, carbohydrates in most CANNED and DRY cat foods.
Information about ingredients and cost was obtained from PetFoodDirect on July 24, 2010. The cost of food does not include shipping Ingredients marked in red are cereal GRAINS and need to be eliminated from your cat’s diet. |

COMMENTS – It is BEST NOT to not feed any dry food
· Some GRAIN FREE cat foods have a lower percentage of carbohydrates. The higher the MEAT protein percentage and fat percentage is: the lower the carbohydrate percentage. Remember that the cats will eat less of the high protein food so it will cost you less to feed a top quality high protein GRAIN FREE cat food.
· Meat: excellent protein source — Meat meal more processed: good protein source
· By Product/meal is an inconsistent ingredient of parts after meat and bone removed: poor protein
· Cereal GRAINS are cheap protein and carbohydrates which do not supply the nutrition cats need.
· Diets high in carbohydrates may cause health issues: diabetes, obesity, food allergies, and IBD. Cats do not need to be over weight to develop diabetes: long with a wealth of information.
· READ the cat food labels. How to read a label to know how much and what kind of meat is present.
Know what you are feeding your cat! Read the post Food not Fit for a Pet by Dr Wendell O. Belfield, D.V.M A cat is a carnivore and NEEDS QUALITY MEAT. This information convinces me that feeding a homemade raw diet to my cats and kittens is the BEST for them. Every pet guardian needs to watch this video about the horrors of pet food. This is a very disturbing video. It is one thing to read about but another to see pictures.
Prepare your own cat food. It is easy to do…..and you know what they are eating. |
